Development of Women and Rural Artisans for Knowledge and Action, or DWARAKA, is an ambitious name and an admirable organization.  At its heart, it has revived the traditional art of kalamkari amongst impoverished rural women in Karnataka, India.  The organization has set up workshops to teach young women this ancient skill.  DWARAKA is more than an art school.  It is a socio-economic empowerment program for the region.  It provides after-school and weekend programs for the children of artisans, access to healthcare, and business education to develop a market for their products.  For many women it has been a lifeline to a sustainable livelihood. To be able to feed and clothe their children through the practice of pursuing such an exquisite art form is a blessing come true for these women.
