Manuel Reyes Negrito Mask

Availability: In stock

Made in Mexico by master artist and potter, Manuel Reyes, these masks are collector's items. Made from the clay of Oaxaca and painted with pigment taken from the local rocks, these masks proudly reflect the history of the indigenous people of North America. One hanging on a wall will inspire conversation. A group of three or five will make a powerful statement.

This mask was inspired by the Mixtec people of Oaxaca who perform the Tejorones Dance. It was meant to represent a descendant of the black slaves who were brought from Africa to work on sugar cane or indigo plantations. They were seen as bold, with supernatural powers, by the indigenous people.
